Logic of natural energy distribution is "Distributed over a wide area" Generation will be also distributed and storage may also be same. Those storages that can be downsized economically will succeed.
24x7 power is due to economies of scale reached by higher utilization of manufacturing assets (machinery, plant etc) and some processes that can be stopped at great cost only.
In the later case solar input can be combined with conventional energy. In most cases the machines have become cheap (in terms of energy consumed per year). So an AC will consume energy equal to its value in 1 to 2 years. It may not be important to sweat some production processes. It may be better to run it as per energy available.
Gap between CNG and Liquid Oil prices will reduce (in terms of energy content). India already announced NG price hike for April 2014.
Peak Oil and shale gas studies will hopeful clear the picture about availability.
Govt will not have money this year. Therefore paradox. Solar will increase!
Applications energized by solar will be adapted and demonstrated.
This will help reduce reliance on subsidy etc.
We are doing the same for hot water - 1st Heat Pump = savings. 2nd After short payback reinvest some savings into Solar Thermal. This takes care of 90% of the daily energy.
3rd. After savings start flowing in, we look at PV to take the Heat Pump off grid.
Result self paying road map for solar.
PV + Heat pump = multiplication of PV output to almost = energy from the Solar Radiation. More Bang for your PV output.
I read somewhere that leading elevator companies are offering solar powered lifts.
Grid and off grid are the same if only surplus power is exported. Important to start a small grid level 2 way power flow experiment in India (in a public grid). This will help localize the requirements for an intelligent grid.
2014 will take us beyond viability of solar. Hopefully people will stop hankering after higher efficiency and extreme engineering.
Nature is equitable, timely and sensible. It is time to learn from it.
